Factors to consider when designing a stylish, durable and functional commercial washroom

Designing a stylish, durable, and functional commercial bathroom requires careful consideration of several factors, including the materials, layout, fixtures, and lighting.

Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Choose Durable Materials: Commercial Bathrooms are generally high-traffic areas, so it's important to consider selecting materials that can withstand high levels of traffic, moisture, and wear and tear. Porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone tiles are durable and easy to clean. Stainless steel and solid surface materials are also excellent choices for sinks, countertops and hardware.  Stainless Steel is more resistant to corrosion extending the lifespan of the hardware and reducing replacement costs for the facility.

Optimise Layout: The layout of the bathroom should be optimised to maximize functionality and efficiency. Consider the traffic flow and ensure there is enough space for people to move around comfortably. Provide ample space for storage and ensure that the fixtures are placed in locations that are convenient for users.

Consider Accessibility: Ensure that the bathroom is accessible to people with disabilities.  There are a number of key requirements, as outlined in the Australia Standards when it comes to designing accessible bathrooms including, minimum clearances and dimensions for accessible spaces, height and location requirements for handrails and other assistive devices, requirements for accessible doorways as well as guidelines for the design and construction of accessible toilets.  A well-designed accessible bathroom can enhance the overall experience for its users and promote inclusivity.

Choose Stylish Fixtures: It's all in the details.  There is so much choice in the marketplace, but it's important to select fixtures that are stylish and compliment the overall design of the space. Chrome and stainless steel fixtures are classic and durable, while polished stainless steel creates a highly lustrous appearance, resulting in a glossy, mirror-like finish.  Black Hardware has certainly made a statement over the past few years, black hardware paired with white or light-coloured tiles can make a striking contrast.

Provide Ample Lighting: Proper lighting is essential for a functional commercial bathroom. Ensure that the lighting is bright and even, without casting shadows or glare. Consider using energy-efficient LED lighting to save on energy costs.

Install Hands-Free Features: Installing hands-free features, such as motion sensor faucets, soap dispensers, and toilets, can help promote hygiene and reduce the spread of germs.  Incorporating hardware that is treated with an Antimicrobial coating can also create a safer more hygienic washroom.
