Charles Darwin Centre - Darwin, Northern Territory

Architect: Pei Cobb Freed & Partners
Builder: Sunbuild
Developers: Paspaley Pearls Properties

Located in the heart of Darwin's city centre, The Charles Darwin Centre is destined to take centre stage in the city's transformation as the fastest growing business hub for Northern Australia and beyond to Asia Pacific.

The new 20 storey Charles Darwin Centre for Paspaley proposes an iconic lens shaped building giving Darwin a unique sculptural form on its skyline. Dwp suters is working in alliance with Pei Cobb Freed (New York, NULL), who demonstrated to the Darwin City Council and the Northern Territory Government a full range of planning options, winning approval for this outstanding non-conforming design solution.

The tower design maximises superb views of the Darwin waterfront. The regular 1,200 sqm column-free floor plates, meet the needs of both the client and the Northern Territory Government as tenants. The heritage façade is maintained as the shopfront for Paspaley Pearls, establishing an appropriately sophisticated termination point for the mall. The commercial tower is carefully oriented to minimise the impact of its scale on this active streetscape, providing 15,000sqm of lettable space. The tower is clad in prefinished metallic panels and high performance glass with horizontal sun shades that reduce energy consumption in Darwin’s intense tropical climate to achieve a five star NABERS rating.
