To support the growing demand for air travel and maintain Hong Kong’s status as a leading international aviation hub—with half the world’s population within a five-hour flight—construction of a third runway at Hong Kong International Airport is underway. The airport remains the world’s busiest for cargo and is also among the top for passenger traffic.

This major expansion, which began in 2016, involves reclaiming approximately 650 hectares of land—on a scale comparable to building a new airport beside the existing one. Key elements include a 3.8-kilometre runway, over 15 kilometres of taxiways, a new air traffic control tower, and a new passenger terminal with 57 aircraft parking positions. The terminal will be linked to the existing ones via an automated people mover and a new baggage handling system. Expansion of Terminal 2 is also in progress.
